Iowa State defensive back David Sims was charged Tuesday with unauthorized use of a credit card stemming from a July 17 incident in Ames.
The charge, an aggravated misdemeanor, may be punishable by up two years in jail and may include a fine between $625 and $6,250 under Iowa law.
I have met with David about this incident and related my deep disappointment in his actions, which are not representative of a member of our football program, coach Paul Rhoads said in a statement.
I have informed him he will face disciplinary action which will be handled internally in the athletics department and within our football program.
In addition, he has been relieved of his position as a co-captain on our football team.
Sims, last seasons Big 12 Conference defensive newcomer of the year, was a subject of an Ames Police Dept., investigation after Veronica Gonzalez of Des Moines reported her credit card stolen and used unlawfully in Ames.
Authorities issued a search warrant for Sims Ames residence last Wednesday. The warrant was sealed.
There were some things recovered that were listed on the search warrant, Ames Police Department commander Mike Brennan said last week.
Ames police sent their findings to Story County Attorney Stephen Holmes office.
Sims led the 7-6 Cyclones with five interceptions. He also forced three fumbles.
